3RD WEEK JANUARY 2008 (14TH -18TH)

SQUIB DIARY

MONDAY 14TH JANUARY 2008
Squib’s out. The first in the year. Cover Story - “FROM GRASS TO S.A.N,” the Rise of Dele Adesina. Was at the Ikeja High Court for a case - my very first in the year. Saw a ‘gaping’ crowd of Law School Students on attachments to the court.

I remember when I was an infant
I remember when I was a rookie
I remember when I was a green horn
I remember when I was a novice!

Did you sing along?
Quite a healthy number of lawyers and litigants in the courts today. The year has just really started for litigation lawyers.
Heard the rumours (faintly) though that JUSAN members would go on nation-wide strike tomorrow. Will the strike really take place in the Lagos Judiciary? When the leadership of the JUSAN is beheaded? Well, tomorrow is just the next day. We’ll see.

TUESDAY 15TH JANUARY 2008
Was at the Ikeja High Court. Tied down till 3.55 p.m., doing one case or the other. No JUSAN strike after-all, workers went about duties, most dutifully.
Was at the 4th Chief Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture after the event had ended. But you could trust a Gecko to know what happened even in absentia.
Having come so late, was only fitting that I was one of the last to leave. Just as I was about to leave, a character approached me for “help!” Said he was an out-of-pocket journalist.
Medium? THISDAY!
Nature of Application: Transport Money.
Reason for Application: Missed out from the “settlement”
largesse from the organisers of the lecture.
Well, I felt rather amused. But, since the fellow said he was my colleague, we gave him something. Something is better than nothing. No?

WEDNESDAY 16TH JANUARY 2008
Was at the Ikeja High Court. At noon. Had some papers filed. Nothing much to do in court today.

THURSDAY 17TH JANUARY 2008
Was at the Ikeja High Court. Did my case(s) and strolled around - gecko style. Saw the obituary notice of one Muftau(?) Etti, a junior judiciary staff. Served quite a long, long time in the office of the Chief Judge. Loyally, I presumed. Reason why the authorities recognised him? So many others before him had gone without such recognition. May Etti’s soul rest in peace.

FRIDAY 18TH JANUARY 2008
Spent quite a long time at the Maximum Security Prison, today. As a visitor of course.
Got to the Ikeja High Court quite late in the day. Had a brief meeting with a special gecko.

SECOND WEEK JANUARY 2008 (7TH - 11TH)

SQUIB DIARY

MONDAY 7TH JANUARY 2008
Was at the Ikeja High Court; this very first Monday of the year. The Squib (so sorry to disappoint dear readers), not out. Attended the meeting of the Tigers (NBA Ikeja Branch). Large turn-out of members as usual. Very lively too, as usual. All top tigers appeared to be comedians who missed their calling. You had to be there to know how ‘wise-cracky’ they could be.

TUESDAY 8TH JANUARY 2008
Was at the Ikeja High Court. Traffic of lawyers and litigation therein appeared rather light. Could see that the renovation work in the New Court Complex, still very much under way.

WEDNESDAY 9TH JANUARY 2008
Spent less than 60 seconds in the Ikeja High Court today. Just came there to drop off a colleague at the Bar Centre, in the afternoon.

THURSDAY 10TH JANUARY 2008
Was at the Ikeja High Court. Spent some time at the Bar Centre. Saw Tigers making preparations for this year’s Fawehinmi Festival; the festival holds 15th January and is the 4th, since 2005, to celebrate Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Nigeria’s foremost social critic and human rights activist’s call to the bar on 15th January, 1965.

Later went to Ikorodu with some un-geckoish colleagues for some real estate business. Were all very well hosted by an NBA Ikorodu branch chieftain, Adebanjo by name. The entertainment included only one of the 3 Ws. But that singular W was thrilling enough. You are dying to know this particular W. Since I am feeling wicked, won’t tell. Hmm, what sweet fish we ate though on top of some cool bottled Bacchus tears, this, courtesy of Femi, one of our own guys.

FRIDAY 11TH JANUARY 2008
Was at the Ikeja High Court. Saw Tigers putting finishing touches to the Fawehinmi festival. Spent some time in the High Court Library.
Had always admired the spider web design of the central ceiling of the library. Saw some folks in the library espying me. The way you take secret looks at Martians. Went later to the Police Headquarters for some Squib business. Met the top gun there.
